[There's a quirk of a smile as she sips her drink, but it fades shortly after.]
Well it's a cosmic entity. Some call it the spark of creation an' life. It's also all consumin' an' can be corrupted. [There's a pause.] It chooses a host, its power channeled through them.
The Phoenix Force started headin' towards Earth. With the power to consume worlds, the Avengers saw it as a threat. Mutants saw it as salvation, a way to recover from impending extinction.
[She's boiling a lot of this down into broad strokes, and is very clearly not going into some of the more emotional details. Not yet.]
War broke out between Avengers and X-Men. It was messy. Ah didn't join the fray mahself until Falcon an' his team trespassed on the school and hurt the children.
[Suffice to say, Rogue makes a hell of a Mama Bear, and she's not about to tell this Cap all her dirty secrets.]
There's a whole lot more, but the Phoenix Force got split five ways into five separate mutant hosts.
[ He's following along, but - Falcon? That doesn't sound like something he'd do at all. But he reminds himself that it's another version of him, a different copy. They're not all going to be the same. ]
Okay, and then what happened?
[ So far he's hearing mostly about this fight. He assumes the X-Men are another superhero team. He wonders if she expects animosity from him - but she also seems more aware of this whole multiverse thing than he is.
Maybe mentioning Falcon was supposed to be a test. ]
[To be fair, the team was provoked and the students acted of their own accord to try and protect the younger students.]
At first? A lot of good. Even split five ways it's an insane amount of power.
[She sighs and takes a drink, mulling over how she wants to proceed on top of the memories. Magik putting the Avengers in a prison of their own worst nightmares, Rogue 'betraying her people' by trying to break them free because it was just wrong. Then there was how that power ended up killing Charles.]
But that power? It corrupts. [That's putting it lightly.] An' the Avengers kept on fightin' them. One by one they fell, an' their shares of the power left them, until there was one with it all.
[It's weird to try and explain all this to Steve, when her universe's Steve was in the thick of it.]
By that point, the Dark Phoenix had taken over and the X-Men had joined with the Avengers to try and stop it.
[There's a deep pain creeping into her voice, and she's fighting back emotions to form the words. Anger at the loss steadies her.]
Charles tried to end it peacefully. An' he was murdered for his efforts.
[It wasn't Scott's fault, but she's still upset and hurting.]
He was like a father to me, to so many of us, his killer included.
[ He listens to this, and he looks to understand the gravity of how awful a situation it all was. ]
So what can we do to prevent it?
[ Maybe Rogue could go back in time - or maybe she's just here to tell Steve how it works so it doesn't happen on his planet, to his planet's Rogue. If there even is an X-Men. If there are even mutants the way she knows them. ]
And Charles... for the short time he was here, he was my friend. I guess maybe he was just like that. Too young to be a father figure. I don't like knowing where he ends up, but it sounds just like him to go out that way.
[ In the service of others, trying to protect his students. ]

Wanda and Hope Summers were able to finally redirect it, turnin' it into some sort of spark. We started seein' new mutants for the first time since... Well in a long time.
[It was the hope that the X-Men had been fighting for against the Avengers. They just didn't know what that hope would cost them.]
If somethin' like this happens back home for y'all, try an' find a way to work with each other. Maybe that'll help prevent the lives we lost.

[ As much of a friend as Charles was to him, he imagines that to know him so well would've been a treat - he was so caring, always had such a big heart.
Funnily enough, it's why he always imagined that Charles was so near Erik all the time: Erik was always so sullen and dour. He thought maybe Charles took it as a challenge to get him to be happy, and maybe Erik only tolerated Charles being so kind.
